CHICAGO -- When I went off to college many moons ago, I couldn't wait to get out on my own. But, about four months into my first year, I began to miss some of the comforts of home (one of which was my mom doing my laundry)!
Wayne points out some of the items to include in a care package. Note the picture of Wayne in college with an afro!
Care packages from home were always a welcome treat. My mother and my aunt always made chocolate chip cookies and I would usually get two or three shipments during the course of a year. They also tossed in a few other useful things to make my dorm life a bit more comfortable.
Since I think that freshman year is the toughest for a student going off to college, I thought I'd offer up a few fun things that you can send to you son or daughter. Instead of my mom's and aunt's chocolate chip cookies, I've developed a new recipe for Coconut Oatmeal Macadamia Nut Cookies. The recipe is below. It's pretty yummy.
In addition to homemade cookies, there are a number of things you can add to the care package to help get your kids though that tough first year. Here's a big list. Pick and choose the ones that might benefit your college student and package them in a nice reusable container (a picnic basket or storage container that they can use in the room), and send it on its way.
